Hair care is one of those areas that I tend to struggle the most with. My hair seems to be so finnicky and sensitive. When I leave it alone it tends to be the healthiest. That means if I dye it, put heat to it and style it, things can go bad. Split ends and breakage are all but a reality.
My hair is probably about medium thickness. I would say that if is "straight" however I still need to use a flat iron if I want it to be actually straight. It tends to have a slight almost messy kink to it that does not look very nice on it's own.
My hair has been healthier lately due to me working from home. I have put very little heat to it since I don't need to style it regularly. On days when I do style it, I at least try to let it air dry as much as possible to reduce the heat from the dryer
When I find products that actually work on my hair and keep it feeling and looking healthy even after styling, I try to stick with it. Why try to switch things up and do something new if the current system is working.
I want to share the 5 hair care products I have been loving. These are products that I typically use for either styling or keeping the hair healthy. I am still working on finding a shampoo and conditioner that I love. I just bought a set from Virtue and am anxious to try it out and review. So without further ado...
Kiehl's Magic Elixir
One thing that I have learned is that if you don't have a healthy scalp then you won't have healthy hair. This Magic Elixir helps just that. You put a little on your scalp, rub it in a circular motion and let it sit about 10 minutes before you shampoo out. You only use this on days that you are going to shampoo your hair since it is an oil.
Since using this elixir I have noticed healthier, more manageable hair. My scalp is no longer dry and itchy which has contributed to my hair also being less dry. The elixir washes out easily and does not leave an oily residue. A little goes a long way. I have had this Elixir for probably about 6 months now and I still have plenty left. It will last a long time.
This elixir is great for anyone who had a dry, itchy scalp, dry hair, and/or dandruff. It is meant to help with all these problems and restore some manageability to the hair.
Innersense Leave-In Conditioner
The smell of this conditioner alone wins with me. It is so invigorating and seems to set my spirit at ease. It also works! Added bonus: it is a clean product. That's right! No added harmful ingredients. You may have noticed I have been incorporating clean beauty products into my routine so I was so happy to find a clean hair care product that does what it is supposed to do.
I spray this on my towel-dried hair before I comb. It has made my hair so smooth and gets rid of those nasty tangles. My hair is always left feeling softer, smoother, and healthier.
I have used some leave-in sprays that goes on too heavy and seems to just build-up. This conditioner does not do that. It goes on light and never feels heavy. I use it after every hair wash. Since I don't wash my hair every day this conditioner has lasted me a couple months and I still have a good amount left.
eva.nyc Zero Gravity Volume Powder
This is actually a product I have been using for a couple years now but I love it! I use it after I style to add in some volume. It always gives a slight teasing look without actually teasing. My hair tends to fall flat after styling. This always adds some bounce.
I actually haven't tried any other volume powders but have heard people complain about some of them being too sticky. This powder does leave a little sticky texture. It is supposed to. That is how it works. I do not feel it adds too much and tends to go away a bit when you work it in.
After I style I sprinkle a little bit of the volume powder on my roots. You an also add a bit to the strand itself if you want an overall more full look. I usually just stick to the roots. A little goes a long way so obviously the more you sprinkle the more sticky it will git. You then gently rub it into your roots. It makes my hair just plump up a bit.
My hair always looks great the next day too. I can put it up in messy buns or ponies and have a good amount of texture and volume in my hair, but it also washes out easily.
Verb Ghost Prep
With my hair being so easily damaged, I try to use products to protect from the heat. I have been using Ghost Prep by Verb. It is lightweight and adds some moisture while protecting from heat. I just add a little to my wet hair on days that I plan on styling. It also helps to control frizz which is an added plus when you live in the hot, humid south.
Again, a little goes a long way and since I don't heat style every day the product has been lasting for a while. I try to put it throughout my hair and comb or brush through to evenly distribute. It is also considered a clean product which you know I love!
Whenever I heat style I notice split ends and breakage almost immediately. Even on days of heat styling, I have noticing much less of both. My hair is overall stronger. I have tried other heat protectants and have been unimpressed with the results. This is a product I will purchase again and again. The product also has 4.9/5 stars from reviewers so many others are in agreement!
Pantene Nourishing Hair Oil
So I will be the first to admit that I do not love and do not really use Pantene hair products. I try to keep things clean and would rather use salon quality that I know is giving my hair the good stuff. I was actually given this stuff a very long time ago. I think it was in a beauty box from months and months back. I figured I have it I might as well give it a try.
I can say I am presently surprised in this hair oil. I add a little to the ends of my hair and work my way up. I have tested it by only adding to one side of my hair. The side that has the oil is shinier, healthier looking, and a bit more manageable after styling. It is meant to help keep split ends at bay. As stated above, my split ends have great decreased even after heat styling.
You can also use the oil on wet hair for styling protection. I have not tried it this way as I like the way my hair looks after using it dry. It is an option though if you feel it would benefit you better.
When I run out I may try a cleaner option, but this oil is from $5-$7 depending on the retailer you purchase it from. At such a low price and with knowing that it is making a difference in my hair then I may keep using this one. When it comes to things like shampoos and conditioners, it is worth the added expense. With something like an oil that is used in such a small amount and in addition to other, more quality styling products. This is one product I think is fine with keeping cost down with.
I know that everyone's hair is different. Not all products work for all hair types. With there being thin, medium, thick hair types plus straight, wavy, curly, dry, oil, normal hairs it can be hard to figure out what works for your hair type. These are products that have been working for mine and most of these products are great for all hair types.
All hair needs a heat protectant. Many hair types can use a little extra volume and oomph in their hair after styling. Most hair will need a little extra hydration although some may need more than others.
